A schooner, supposed to be the G-olden lele, from Eusßell, is signalled as we go to press. ~ The clipper schooner Lffltitia is advertised to leave for Hokianga direct on Saturday next.
H.M.S. Blanche .left Lavuka foi ydney on the 11th instant.
The s.B. Wonga "Wonga arrived at I/evuka from Sydney on the 11th instant, and left again on the 13th, with eight passengers for California.
The 8.8. Q-o-Ahead left the Manakau yesterday, for Southern ports. Passengers—Mr. and Mrs. Chubban and family (5), Messrs. Bay ley, Carrick, Hampton, H. Moore. The Sea Chill, brigantine, from Auckland, left that port on the 25th April, sighted Kadavu. on the 7th instant, arriving in port on Sunday morning last; experienced a heavy N.N.E. gale on the 28th of April, the rest of the yoyage had fine weather.— Fiji Times, June 13.
The schooner Merlin, - Captain Yates, arrived in harbour last evening, after a capital passage of ten days. LeftLevuka on Sunday, 18th inst., with a pleasant breeze from E.N.E., -which continued four days. In lat. 25 deg. 25 mm. S., long. 177 deg. 54 mm. E., experienced a heavy sea from the S.E., the wind being from N.N.E., causing the vessel to roll in a terrific manner, all sail had to be lowered for safety of masts and rigging. On Friday, 23rd inst., in lat. 26 deg. 14 mm. S., the wind shifted to K.W., and increased to a gale with a high angry sea, which compelled the schooner to be hove-to for sixteen hours on Saturday, 24th, then "veering to S.W. moderated to a calm on Monday, 26th. Since then had strong westerly gales until arrival in harbour. The Merlin brings 17 passengers, viz., 14 Europeans, 3 Fijians. Cargo : 21 sacks maize, 4 quarter-casks brandy, 2 ditto sherry, and 1 winch. The Manova, schooner, left Levuka twenty-seven hours previously, and the Sea Gull, schooner, was to have left a day later than the Merlin. Passengers:—Mr. W. C. G-ardenhire and three Fijian servants, viz., one dwarf 3 ft. 4 in. high, and two chiefs, en route for the United States ; Mr. D. Oxley, Mr. and Mrs. Legae, Messrs. D. Kirkwood, W. Davis, Meyers. Trevor Jones, Miller, H. Soss, D. Boss, A.. Boss, John Gardner, Thos. Smith. Among the miscellaneous cargo, is a jar containing the hand of a Lovoni chief killed by the King's soldiers on the day of sailing, presented by King Thakombau to Mr. W. C. Gardenhire ; also a collection of Fiji curiosities.
The following address was presented to Cnpt. Yates:—"To Capt.M. Yate«. Sir,— "We> the undersigned passengers by the Merlin, desire emphatically to express our thanks for, and our approbation of, your conduct as master of the ship, as well as of your personal care and kindness to us on the very stormy passage from Levukato Auckland, just ended, and to express our best wishes for your future success.—We are, &c, Trevor Jones, Dr. Kirkwood, O. B. Miller, 1). Oxley, ,W. O. Gardenbire, G. H. Legg, H. Boss, A. Ross, N. O. Meyers, W. Davies, D. Ross, J. G-ardner." [Reply.3 •—" Schooner Merlin, Auckland, June 29. To the passengers per Merlin. Gentlemen, —I have to express my heartfelt pleasure at receiving this token of your good feeling towards me, and I trust I may always find it as easy—as it shall ever be my aim—to be of s.ervice to my passengers. —I am, &c, M. Taxes, master schooner Merlin."
