Craig.—Mr. MacCormick and Mr. Brookficld for the plaintiff; Mr. Hesketh and Mr. JRces for the defendant. —ThejTurthcr hearing of this case was resumed this morning, ■vviiehfytUe'plaiblj'i crossexamined by Mr. Hcskoth. He said that Chief Paul had an interest in tho land, put though he had < cultivations there. b° bad not lived there since 18G6. Paul signed a document to baud over tho timber logs. Witness had instructed his lawyer to prepare a, document, and tho logs were handed over to witness. Craig summoned witness for some debts. Tho^ witness st>id if Craig ','bad paid his money " nothing would have been heard of tho present suit. Witness's mother owned an interest in these lands, but upon hor,.denth witness took her place, and succeededsisQ^h** rights Witness in reply to questions'saJid liewaaitSe man down there who know the law, that ho was not such] a " perfect fool" as to bo taught by others. Paul was a " rangatira " in his district, but he (witness) was the chief man "down there." Although tho witness was exami led through the medium of an interpreter, it was stated that he understood English very well,, and* could speak it fluently. It was afterWards-;- that Paul handed them over. Got Paul '£t$ hand over tho logs " in order that the work'might be clear according to European usages. Paul said it was right to take an action against Craig, and referred the matter to witness, who "understood European ways.
