ATHLETIC SPORTS.

Thk first half-yearly fete of the Auckland College took place to-day in the grounds of the college. Decorations of an extensive and tasteful kind lent attractions to the scene, and the events passed off with great satisfaction. The ground unfortunately Jwas very heavy, which made the straggles of the lads much more laborious] There were between two and three hundred persons assembled, and great interest was manifested in the proceedings.' There were about forty prizes, consisting of bats, albums, writing desks, books, paint-boxes, &c, whicfe were contested for with great earnestness. The first race was won by Dickey, Newell making a good second. The second rice, for boys under 10 years, was won by Bartlett, E. Owen being second. Third rice, all ages, Mason and fridings tied. Fourth race, for boys under 12 years : first, Havr ; second, Price. Fifth race, b^ys under 14 years, 220 yards : I hi* was awry exciting race, and some Letvy spills eusu>d ;it resulted in — Ist, Wynyard j 2nd Lsn^sford. Next cutne throwing the cricket ball which was won by Naligbton, who threw it one hundred and! eig'ity-nine feet. Seventh race (Siamese), 100 yards: Ist, Skeats and Price, 2nd l>'l&oulin and Cook. The Bth race: was the champion race : Ist heat, j Naughton ; 2nd, JN"ewell. 9th race, for Ijoys under, 10, 150 yards, resulted in a dead heat between Canning and O'vjuiiyan—decision reserved. Next came jhe walking match, which was very .closely contested, between Uayr, Lumaden, and Brown, Hayr winning,., by- a head. Next Cftine vaulting with-a^pole,-Which was won by W. Gray, who^se'd/i" seven/foot pole, and vaulted five ,feetlseven inches high. In the running' long jump, Naughton won, clearing thirteen^ fftt eight inches. In this walkingmatch, half a mile, Weijly won. After, these events there was a special parade of the cadets.
