THE PHŒBE AND AHURIRI.
The Wellington correspondent of the Napier Telegraph says :—The Phoebe has been laid up, and all her hands paid off. The Ahuriri will be done the same with as soon as she arrives. The owner, Mr. Martin, is said to have lost £700 by the two boats last month, and as there is no longer a mail contract in connection with the San Francisco service, he. has come to the determination of laying the steamers up, and disposing of them altogether if he can. rf he new San Francisco mail service has never been very popular here, but it has grown in disfavor since one of the practical results of bringing 3000-ton steamers to do coasting work has been to drive two of our own steamers out of the trade. By these two vessels being laid up, about fifty men will be thrown out of employment—no slight matter in these dull times.
