WRECK OF THE SCHOONER 'JULIA.'
O^E MAN D OWNED
The fore-and-aft schooner Julia, the property of Benjamin P. Greenwood, of Grahamstown,
has been wrecked, whilst on her passage from Omaha to this port. The master of the vessel, Murdoch McKay, arrived in Auckland yesterday, and tliis morning made the following Statenwnt before the Collector of Customs : I was master of the Julia, which sailed from BigOhiaha on Thursday/last, the 23th ult.,
with a cargo of 23 tons of firewood, about 4 tons of which were on deck. The only person on board brides myself was John McUarcly. When wo left the wind was
N.E., blowing fresh, with heavy sea. When we wore about four miles out we tried to stuy,in order to run back to >inaha, but she would not come round. Afc \\\m Lime, 4.30 p.m., she had nliou't three feet of water in hr, and at 5 p.m wo anchored at Tokatea Poi*t, about oue hundred yards off. She held on till one o'clock in tho morning, when the cablo parted, and the vessel went ashore on the rocks. The dingy got washed olf her decks when she struck. Mclfardy and I were standing amidships, and she went to pieces in ten minutes. I jumped overboard, and told Me Hardy to follow. I never saw him afterwards. Tho masts and rigging came clown at the lime, and he may have got enInnpled. I swum ashore, and waited till daybreak, and then walked rouud to the Maori encampment, and sent some of them to the scene of tho wreck. They reported that the vessel was all smashed up, and nothing to bo seen of Mcllnrdy. I went to Matakaua and then came on to Auckland. Me Hardy was about twenty-five years of age, and hud been in the vessel some time. It was impossible to get ashore in t'io dingy as there was a very heavy sea running.
