AUCKLAND TOTAL ABSTINENCE SOCIETY.

The annual meeting of the above society -was held last evening, in the large room of the Young Men's Christian Association. There was a very large attendance. Dr. Nicholson, M.P.0., was to have taken the chair, but a letter of apology w:>s received from him, stating that he was unable to be present through illhealth. Mr. Coupland was thereupon elected to fill the chair. Letters of apology were also received from Archibald (lark, Esq., M.H.R., President of the Socioty, from Col. Haultain, a past-President of the Society, and from John Williamson, Esq., M.H.R., who stated that a prior engagement prevented his attendance, but that his strong sympathies were with the Society and its objects.—After a few introductory remarks from tho chairman, Mr. Osmund Lewis, the secretai-y of the Society, read the report.

The Rev. Mr. Edgar moved the adoption of the report in a very able, eloquent, and effective speech.—Seconded by Mr. Wiseman, with a few appropriate remarks.—The second resolution was moved by Mr. Spragg and seconded by Mr. Edward Carr, to the effect that Archibald Clark, Esq., be the President of the Society for the ensuing year, and that the Revs. Messrs. Edgar, Mason, and MacNiccol, Dr. Nicholson and Dr. Philson be the Vice-Presidents. — The motion was unanimously agreed to.—On the motion of the Eev. Mr. Mason, seconded by Mr. Evitt, Mr. Osmund Lewis was appointed Hon. Secretary ; and Mr. J. W. Carr, Assistant Secretary for the ensuingyear; and tho following gentlemen were appointed a committee for tho, same period : Messrs. E. Can-, Coupland, Crow, Bond, Edwards, J. Graham, Hemua, Hughes, Hayter, Hill/J. B. Jackson, Leßoy, Nicholas, J. Roebuck, Spragg, Swinnerton, W. Viokery, and White, with power to add to their number.—A vote of thanks was then passed to the Rev. Mr. Edgar for his attendance and advocacy of the cause, and the proceedings terminated with the singing of the Temperance National Anthem.
