MEETING OF THE NEW CORPO-RATION.-THIS DAY.

Emotion of a M A T OB .-The members of the did City Board met together at the£ offices Canada Buildings, this morning £ the last time. There were present Messrs P A Philips Hampton, Tonks, Staines, Macreadv Asher, Smart, Afckin, Bugden, and Georael.' Mr. Bugden explained to the Board that the long-talked of Corporation had now been granted, and his connection with them had therefore ceased. After reading the notification from the gazette, he retired from the room.—Mr. Smart was then moved to the chair, and explained to those present ■what was necessary tobe done.—Each then read a declaration that he would do his duty faithfully, after which they were declared to be fullfledged councillors. The present business was the fixing the salary of a Mayor and appointing some gentleman to the office.—Mr. Macreadv thought the salary should be £200.—Mr. Hanvnton moved that it be £250.—And Mr. Staines as an amendment moved that there be no salary at all attached to the officees there were many gentlemen who would take it for nothing.—The amendment was not seconded. —Mr. Hampton's motion was carried. On the motion of Mr. Macready, it was unanimously resolved to elect Mr. Philips the first Mayor of Auckland ; and in doing so the Council paid a wellmerited tribute to the business-like abilities, energy, and integrity of Mr. Philips, who was then sent for and invested with the insignia of office, after having made a similar declaration as those made by the other councillors. Councillor Smart congratulated him upon his appointment, and the Mayor replied fo suitable terms, saying lie hoped that the same harmony and goodwill would exist among them as in the' past.—At the conclusion of the proceedings, the Ma,yor invited the Council to take champagne with him, in honor of theoccasion, and to inaugurate the new Corporation, in a fitting manner. They then adjourned to Menzies and had bumpers of champagne. Several toasts were proposed and responded to, among them being our new Mayor and Town Councillors.
