POLICE COURT.—Friday.

[Before E. F; Porter and L.D. Nathan, Esqs., Justices.] Dbttnkenness.—Catherine Townshend, W. Tran.-field, and J. Jones were punished in the usual ninuner. Labceny.—J. Cooper, charged with having stolen, at the Whau, two pieces of bacon valued at £4, was remanded till Monday. Municipal Police Act.—T. Harris was fined ss'and costs, and H. Ananalt 10s, for allowing animals to wander. City Rates.—W. Messenger, charged with refusing to pay £2 16s 3d city rates due, and A. Twelvetrees the sum of 355, were ordered to pay the several amounts. Labceny.—John Gunn was charged by Thomas Faulder with having stolen £33 from the dwelling-houpe of T. Fuulder at Arch Hill. —Thomas Faulder deposed : I employed prisoner about the end of June last. On the 2nd July I left home to come into Auckland. There were from £33 to £40 in gold, and a few pounds in notes and silver, in the house. They were in a drawer in my bedroom. My wife and sister-in-law were at home. Returned in the evening. Prisoner was there till about 7 p.m. Missed the gold next morning. Went to look for prisoner, but he had left. He has been discharged already on this charge. I since saw him on the sth inst.. I spoke to l.im in the presence of a man called Mowbrey. Ar-ked him why he stole the money. He said he could not. help stealing, and that he would be in the hanas of the police before many day* were gone. I asked him what he had done with the money. He said it did not serve him a month. He told me he went overland to the Thames by Drury, and from that to the saw mills at Tairua. Said he had been disappointed about my money ; that he had expected to make a haul; but on counting it the day following, ho had only £19 10s, and thought he must have lost some when running away.—Richard Mowbray, a laborer, corroborated the previous evidence.—Detective Ternahan deposed to the arrest of prisoner, and to his having repeated to him the statements made in the presence of the previous witnesses on the evening of the sth instant. Committed for trial.
