MimicrrAL Police Act.—Heanea, a Maori woman, for breaking a pane of glass, was fined 20s. and costs, or to be imprisoned for one month. McKay Hall was sent to the Destitute Cliil- ; dren's Asylum at Fort Britomart. ! Pawnbkokeks' Act, 18G8.—David Maries was charged by Bridget Skerry with a breach of the above Act, in having charged interest, viz., Bd., in excess of that allowed by law. — Mr. J. B. Russell appeared for the defendant, and Mr. Wynn for the prosecution.—Bridget Skerry deposed: I took some goods on a Monday to Mr. Marks, to be pledged for £3 ss. I left them till the next Saturday night. I got a pawn ticket. They charged me ss. interest. On my saying that the amount of interest was very large, Mrs. Marks replied that it could not be helped, that it would be the same if they remained for a month. Mr. Abram3 told me it was an overcharge. —Crossexamined by Mr. Russell.—David Abrams deposed : At the request of Mrs. Siccrry I gave her £3 10s., to redeem some goods from Mr. Murks. I told her that an overcharge had been made. I called at Marks', and told Mrs. Marks she had made an overcharge.—Crossexamined by Mr. J. B. Russell.—Fiued a shilling and costs. Assault.—Rangiora, a Maori, was charged by Annie Hale with having violently assaulted her by knocking her down, dragging her into a room, and beating her. Mr. Wynn appeared for the prosecution, Mr. J. B. Russell for the defence. A difficulty was raised as to the jurisdiction of the Court, the csise having been heard before oilier magistrates. Dismissed without prejudice.
