VOLUNTEER INSPECTION

THE ARTILLERY

Tirß annual inspection of the Auckland Artillery Volunteers was made to-day by Colonel Harrington, at the Albert Barrack*, at 11 o'clock. The Volunteers mustered at Fort Britomarfc, and proceeded with their band playing to the Barracks. Col. Harrington was received with a general saluV, and the men under the command of Captain Fcalon, were put through manual and platoon exercises ami (he usual evolutions. They then proceeded to gun-drill with the Armstrong guns, firing three rounds of blank ammu-

nition. Colonel Harrington addressed the Volunteers at some length, and they returned to Fort, Britomnrt, the band playing as before, and were there dismissed. A somewhat amusing incident occurred during the progress of the inspection. As Colonel Harrington was proceeding through the ranks, eying the men and their accoutrements according to the usual form, the band, all unwittingly, struck up " The Captain with his whiskers took a sly glance at me." As the gallant Colonel is devoid of those hirsute appendages, the circumstance had a somewhat ludicrous aspect to those whose sense of the ridipp'ous caught tmr rurcc ot Tne incident. ~~
