The Evening Star. TUESDAY, APRIL 25, 1871.
The scrip " ring " are going to try if they can close honest people's mouths, and seek to move the Law to this effect. Will it be believed that Mr. Ton son Garlick has been thi*eatened with a lawsuit if lie will not offer " a full and ample apology, satisfactory to at least two of the directors of the company " ? This is because that the late rigging of the market in Eurekas was described as a " swindle," the which all honest men endorse. There is an affectation that the company was described as participating in the " swindle ;•" whereas, everyone knows
perfectly" well what was meant by the expression, "Eureka all a swindle." It clearly had reference not to the company, nor yet to the claim, but in the eliptical language customary in telegraphy, described the true state of the market in Eurekas. Are we to believe that the directors of this company have been aiders and abettors in rigging the market? Or, on what other principle can we account for their silly conduct in exhibiting bounce. We trust Mr. Garlick will, bid the company goahead, for there is not a jury in the Australasian colonies that would openly sympathise so far with dishonesty as to give a verdict tending to shut the mouths of those who would expose the nefarious transactions at present proceeding m the scrip market. Mr. Garlick reflected iv no way, either on the company or on the claim, but only on the jobbers, who rtre now endeavouring to make tools and fools of the directors. We trust Mr. G-arlick will have the manliness to defy the company to come forward and face the public opinion of the country.
