[ADVERTISEMENT.] "npHOSE WHO LIVE IN G-LASS X HOUSES SHOULD NOT THROW STONES."
To the Editor of the Evening Stae. Sic, —Mr. Cosgrave, trading as a draper (under the style, or firm, of J. Cosgrave aud Co.) in Lower Queen-street, having exhausted his stock of " subterfuges " to sell his goods, has attacked certain drapers in Auckland who have announced their intention of retiring from the trade, publicly expressing hia regret " that respectable houses have to resort to such subterfuges to sell their goods." lam one of those attacked, and as Mr. Cosgrave has seen fit to publicly insult me, he cannot complain if I reply to his offensive advertisement. I suppose that we may infer that he considers himself amongst the respectable drapers of Auckland, and if his plan of conducting business since lie commenced in Auckland, with his " strange device," not commonly used, certainly, amongst drapers,— I mean the "skull and marrow bones" arrangement,— and the style of his advertisements, be respectable then he is respectable; but I thimk he will find, if he has not already found, that Auckland is not the place for him, and that the people of Auckland are not quite so " verdant" as he thinks them.
I will not expose, unless I am provoked, this man's method of conducting business, but he assumes so much that if I remained silent at the present time, we, very probably, would see another " local," still more offensive. He may wish to be ranked as a draper, but if his memorable commercial article, published lately in the Hebald, "on the Tariff," as to what ought to be admitted duty free, as belonging to the " making up " trade, is a specimen of hi 3 knowledge of the trade, then I pity him, including as he did "Russia Crush," i.e., coarse towelling, and other goods equally ridiculous, as belonging to the " making up " trades.
I have no wish to insult anyone, or interfere -with Mr. Cosgrave in his plan of conducting business, but he must be kind enough to mind his own business, and look after his own " white elephant." As to myself, I had no other intention, when I announced that I was about to retire from the trade, but to do so ; and I still have no other intention, though it may be some little time, probably the spring of tho yeai-, before I finally hand over my business to another, as I am determined to get as my successor a respectable and responsible man. I trust that I shall be able to do this without comments from a disappointed man.—l ara, &c,
