MINING INTELLIGENCE.

From to-day's Advertiser

The Caledonian.—A splendid commencement towards another rich fortnight's yield was made in the Caledonian mine yesterday, when seven hundredweight of enormously rich stones were brought to the surface. Some of them were of immense size. One huge block weighed over two hundredweight, and was of such a rich character as to throw the splendid block of stone exhibited last week entirely in to the shade. At n rough calculation, its value may be estimated at £3000. Many of the other blocks, although not so large as this one, were proportionately rich.

The Shotov|:e.—The cleaniug up and retorting, for the S^hqtover, which took place yesterday, only yielded 190 ozs. of gold, although there were about 600 tons of stuff crushed. The number of laudslips which occurred during- the two preceding months 4hivo had-'the effect of; preventing any continuance of the faceworkings. Even the stuff that has been] crushed consisted in a great measure ofjj that which was brought down by thoj landslips. A general meeting of the!

shareholders will be held on the 21st inst. for the purpose of taking into consideration tbe position of the company, and deciding with regard to future workings. It has been suggested that the shaft should be sunk another 50 feet, so as to test the reef at that depth. At the 140 feet level it only yielded 3^ dwts. to the ton, and at the 200 feet level it has averaged 7 dwls. The class of country at this level is also much better than at the former, and it is expected that it may continue to improve downwards. The company have, we understand, a good balance on hand, which will enable them to carry out these workings, should it be deemed advisable to do so.
