CITY BOARD.
Thk usual monthly meeting of the City Board of Commissioners was held yesterday afternoon, at the office of the Board. Present: —M.ssrs. P. 11. Philips (Chairman), Staines, George, Smart, Ashcr, Macrcady. Minutes.—The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Valuation oe Rates. —Mr. Staines said it appeared to him that it, was necessary for the valuator, previous to making an assessment, to make a declaration before a magistrate. Ho would like to sec the minute, to see if it was mentioned or not. There was some talk' outside that Mr. Diddams had not made such a. declaration previous to the striking of the last rate. —The Chairman said ho had himself asked the question. Mr. Diddan 8 had made such a, declaration, but not immediately before the striking of thelastrate. —Mr. Staines said he might have made a declaration ten years ago, but that would not be according to the Act. He would like to sco the minute on the subject.—The Chairman said that the minute should be looked up. The Ghafion Hioiiway Board.—Mr. Staines continued his. reply upon this motion, brought forward last sitting day—" That ono- ' third of the amount be paid by the City Board to the Grafton Highway Board." There was also an amendmeut to the effect that previous to this being settled, there should be a meeting of the .Finance Committee.—The amendment was passed. —On the motion of Mr. Smart to do certain repairs at the end of the Grafton Road, Mr. Macready and other members of the Board thought that the wolHc should not be undertaken at; the present season of the year. —An amendment of Mr. Asher " That the work stand over for the winter," was agreed to, some scoria ash to be placed on the road, to make it passable in the meautime, Grey-street.—The Foreman of Works was instj-ucted to cover the footpath in Greystreet with scoria ash. Correspondence.—A letter was read from Mr. Keane, offering to put down load for load of scoria ash with the Board in Home-street. The offer was accepted, and the application granted. Franklin Road. - Several letters were read from inhabitants of Franklin-road, complaining of the cutting at present being made in that road by the Board, stating that it would materially injure their properties.
