THE LATE GALES.
REPORTS FROM THE NORTH
DAMAGE TO SHIPPING
THE FLAT ROCK BEACON. The schooner Merlin arrived in harbour this morning. She left Kaipara on Wednesday last, and when off Mougonui encountered a terrific gale veering all round the compass. Captain Yates ran into Mohgonni for shelter and, whilst there, the wind suddenly shifted. The whaling ship Adeline dragged her anchor and drifted down upon the Merlin, carrying away her jibboom, rigging, &c. There were two other whalers in Mongonui, but they escaped without damage. The schooner Merlin left Mongonui on Sunday, and called in at Wangaruru, where she met the cutter Three Sisters, from the Bay of Islands. The master of the Three Sisters reported that the storm had been very destructive to property in the Bay of Islands district, and that the shipping had been very much knocked about. The cutter Ruby had been driven ashore, and suffered considerably. The schooner Sea Breeze dragged and fouled one of the whaling ships, carrying away her bowsprit, head-gear, &c. The whaler also received some damage. Several small boats were smashed up. Captain Stephenson, of the barque Christina reports that the beacon is washed from the Flat Rock off the Kawau.
