"We are glad to see that no time is being lost in utilising the grant of the fcreneral Assembly to the various Highway Boards. The first work undertaken by the Parnell Board is especially of great public advantage, being one that will confer benefits not only on the residents in that suburban district, but on the city and the country. We have just learned that a contract has been made with the Board by Messrs. Archard and Brown, for a sum of £440, the work to be done being the removal of a difficulty that has hitherto been a great obstacle to the progress of Parnell. The improvement commences at the Swan Inn, and includes the raising of the roadway from that point to the foot of the rise; the extension of the stone bridge and a very considerable cutting in the bend of the road ascending the hill. One of the most important improvements is the erection of a stout wall of stone, three feet in thicknes, and six feet high, protecting the outside of the curve, and intended to remove the danger to horses and vehicles in descending the hill of being hurled over the precipice. Altogether the improvement in the approaches to Parnell is one of very great importance, and we congratulate the Board on their spirited enterprise. We learn that to this work the City Board has contributed the sum of £80, which may be considered \to bear a fair proportion to the amount of benefit to city interests in the proposed work.
