THE CUTTER ' WANGAREI' WATER-LOGGED.

NARROW ESCAPE OF PASSEN-

GERS AND CREW,

We are indebted to one of the passengers for the following particulars of the mishap to the cutter Wangarei, from which it will be seen that the vessel became water-logged, and had to be beached to save the lives of those on board. The Wangarei, Captam Anderson, left this port on Friday afternoon, with a cargo of flour, bone dust, bricks, and sundries. She had also five passengers, amongst whom were Messrs. Baker and Ha j ward. The vessel had to beat down the coast with a moderate N.K. breeze, and at 11 o'clock on the following (Saturday) morning, being then off Point Rodney, it was discovered that she was making water fast. One of the lady passengers was the first to observe the leak, and immediately informed Captain Anderson that the water was coming through the cabin floor. Upon examination it was found that the vessel was filling rapidly, and the wind being still ahead, Captain Anderson run back, and beached the cutter at tha Kawtttr, in _djnt of the residence of Sir George Grey. Duriag" the time the vessel waT running back Captain Anderson had the boats all ready in the event of their being required.

For three hours the vessel was in a sinking condition, and it. is believed that if she had been at sea another 15 minutes she would have foundered. Upon arriving at the Kawau the passengers landed, and were kindly sheltered for the night under the roof of Sir George's mansion. On Sunday morning LSir George sent one of his men to guide Messrs. Baker and Hajward to Matakana, the othor passengers, residents of Wangarei, remained behind. From Matakana they proceeded to Mahurangi, and came on to Auckland by the p.s. Lady Bowen. The other passengers will proceed to Wangarei as soon as an opportunity offers, and the vessel will probably be patchdd up and come on to Auckland for repairs.

The passengers wish to express their gratitude to Sir George Grey for his kindness to them, and also to Captain Anderson and his crew.
