MERCURY BAY.
HEAVY GALES AND FLOODS
DESTRUCTION OF PEOPEETY.
By the cutter Whitby, from Mercury Bay, we learn that the recent easterly (rules were very severely felt at Mercury Bay, and that the heavy rains flooded the whole country, doing immense damage to crops, &c. Mr. Geoi'ge White's farm is completely submerged, his stockyards, palings, fences, and everything else being washed away. Mr. White will be a loser to the extent of about £500. The other farmers in the district have also been great sufferers. All the bridges over the creeks, rails, shingles, &c, have been carried out to sea, and the whole of the plantation of t"he natives destroyed. The flood has done good to the mills, large quantities of timber having been carried down for the two mills of the district. The following vessels, which had been taking shelter for several days, took their departure on Saturday, with a fresh southerly wind :—Kate Grant, Fortune, Bella Mary, Ann, and Success.
