NARROW ESCAPE OF H .M.S.S. 'CLIO' FROM SHIPWRECK.
THE VESSEL STRIKES ON A ROCK. Safety of Governor Bowen. H. M. S. S. VIRAGO AND LUNA; SENT FOR. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. Queenstown, February 24. Her Majesty's s. s. Clio, Commodore Stirling, having on board His Excellency the Governor (Sir George Bowen), Captain Pitt, Dr. Hector, and several others, struck on a rock yesterday on the West Coast, near Martin's Bay, and is in a dangerous position. She is leaking badly. The Clio was" on a visit with the Governor and others. It is stated that the rock is not in the chart. A telegram has been sent to Dunedin for assistance. G p.m. The Virago will leave immediately to bring back the Governor and party. The ship is off the rock and is now in safe anchorage. No lives lost. The following is a copy of the telegram received by Lady Bowen from Sir George:— Queenstown, February 24. The Clio has just struck on a rock not mentioned in the chart, and tho leak is so serious that she will be detained here for several weeks. Thank God there is no danger to life, as we arc in safe anchorage. Dr. Hector is proceeding overland by Martin's Bay to Queenstown, and will telegraph for the Virago and Lima. The latter will take me to Dunedin.
