ARRIVAL OF THE 'W AIHOPAI.'
LATEST
SOUTHERN TELEGRAMS.
FURTHER PARTICULARS
OF THE
WRECK OF THE 'AIREDALE.'
The smart schooner Waihopai has made a rapid passage from Taranaki, and we are indebted to Captain Evans for later papei-3 from Nelson and Taranaki. The s.s. Taranaki was to leave Nelson for the Manukau on Friday. The English telegrams via San Francisco, forwarded by Greville and Co.'s agents via Tauranga, were published at Nelson and throughout New Zealand, at 8 o'clock on Tuesday morning. They were sent from Auckland at 12 o'clock on Monday. The s.s. Phcebe having transhipped the mails and passengers from the Airedale, arrived at Nelson at noon on Wednesday. The s.s. Wallibi crossed the Manukau bar, yesterday, at 2 p.m. The s.s. Airedale is a total wreck about one mile from Oamaria. The greater portion of the cargo, we are glad to learn, has been saved, and on Thursday last Captain Kennedy and his crew were taking out the machinery. The weather has been remarkably fine since the accident, and the water quite smooth, otherwise very little would have been saved from the wreck. Two surf boats had been employed, aud the crew working night and clay saving cargo, &c. The s.s. Alharabra arrived at Nelson on the 13th instant.
