James Spence, of Grahamstown, offers to walk Gwynn, of Auckland, three or four miles, for the sum of cither £50 or £100 a-side. The annual meeting of tho Auckland Institute will be held at the Museum buildings, at half-past seven o'clock on Monday evening. Tho Rev. J. McNichol will deliver an address to young men to-morrow, at 3 o'clock, in fcho Young Men's Christian Association Rooms. The p.s. Royal Alfred leaves the Queenstreet wharf, this day, at live o'clock p.m., for Grahamstown. Wo notice that host Perkins, of the Occidental Hotel, with his usual enterprise and public spirit, is about to post up the latest news from the Thames three times a day, upon a bulletin board, which will be kept for public inspection in the large room at the back of the bar. Mr. Perkins has a special mining correspondent at the Thames, who will forward telegrams as to "strikes," '■' yields," crushings, and, in fact, anything of interest to the mining speculator at ten o'clock in the morning, at three o'clock in the afternoon, and at nine o'clock in the evening. This will no doubt be a great boon to persons interested in mining matters, and the room will no doubt be liberally patronised as a Stock Exchange iv miniature. A soiree and public meeting was held last evening, in the Mechanics' Institute, to celebrate the passing of the " Permissive Clause" of the Licensing Act. There was a very large attendance. The occasion was under the auspices of the Auckland Alliance for the Suppression of the Liquor Traffic. Dr. IN icholson was voted to the chair. Tho speakers were the Rev. Mr. Mason, the Rev. Mr. Rigg, the Provincial Secretary (H. H. Lusk, Esq.), H. Ellis, Esq., M.P.C., Joseph May, Esq., M.P.C. The intervals between the speeches were occupied by a very efficient choir, consisting of Messrs. Howden, Bartley, Henderson, and Skinner. Mr. Wood presided at the harmonium. The meeting was one of the most numerously attended and enthusiastic that has been held in this city for a long time. A report of the proceedings will he found in another column. The proceedings closed with the National Anthem.
