By an advertisement in another column it will be soon that Mr. Richard Hobbs is retiring altogether from the drapery business. Hi? stock is, therefore, being sold off at very reduced prices. This is a genuine clearingout sale, as Mr. Hobbs is about to leave town altogether and reside in the country.
The Rev. Mr. Brookes and Mr. Bateman, of the Melauesian Mission, were passengers by the schooner Success, from Norfolk Island, yesterday.
His Lordship the Most Rev. Dr. Croke presided at a, meeting of the members of the Catholic Young Men's Society, held in their rooms, Hobson-street, yesterday evening. He expressed iiis satisfaction aL the Society's existence, and commented on the great good a society of this sort could do in a community, and expressed his intention of patronising it, aud endeavoring Lo make its success certain.— [Communicated.] Tenders are required for the repair of certain roads in the Whau Highway District.
A meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of New Zealand, Irish Constitution, will be held this evening. A meeting of the shareholders of the Midnight Gold Mining Company was convened for half-past 7 o'clock last evening, at the Thistle Hotel, but it lapsed, for want of a quorum. John Grwynne challenges Edwards and E. Spence to walk, run, or ride a mile for the sum of £100.
A running match for £1 a-side, distance 100 yards, will come off on Monday next., in Syrnonds-street, between J. Regan and J. Snow.
The transfer books of the Thames Gold Mining Company will be closed until tomorrow, at noon, when a dividend of 153. per share "Will be payable.
