During a late sortie of the French from Paris a trumpeter of the Tenth battalion of Bavarian Jagers managed to cross unobserved into a covered arbor, on the flank of the advancing columns of the French, and at the first check which their onset received from the Germans he boldly sounded the French signal for retreat, loud and long, which being taken up by the enemy's trumpeter, soon caused a general and hasty retrogade movement of the French towards Paris. The staff trumpeter of the Bavarians had picked up, during a previous battle, one of the signal-books used by the French trumpeters, **3 had taught his subordinates this useful '-1 to be used in emergencies.
