Jant/ABY 2(5. —At the election for Caversham district Cantrell, an opponent of the Government, defeated Mclndoe thus, Cantrell, 165 ; Mclndoe,"lo7. —For the Lakes, Ilaughton has polled 147. and Shepherd 77. The returns of two small districts have to come in, but they cannot influence the result.—The Times libel case has been adjourned for a week to enable the attendance of Mr. Gisborno and other officers of the telegraph department. —Mr. Burns' funeral was attended by 1000 persons, and the day was kept a close holiday—There is a report of an attempt to upset Mr. Maclean's election on the ground of bribery. The final numbers are :—Haughtou, 211 ; Shepherd, 192. Shepherd intends resisting on account of an alleged refusal to allow votes to holders of miners' rights who had not actually held them for six months.
