DUNEDIN.
January 18.—Government lias commenced a criminal action against the editor of the ; Times. The magisterial investigation comes off to-morrow.—Calder and McClure oppose Wood for Southland. McMaster is the only candidate for Oamam. January 20.—Scarlatina, arising from unfumigated boxes ex Robert Henderson, has aoken out, causing some alarm. There aro three eases in hospital.—Roas, of the Survey Department, opposes Driver for Rosyln. At the Queenstown nomination Shepherd and Haughton were proposed ; show of hands in favor of former. A very keen contest is expected. At Invercargill, Calder, Lumsden, and McCurie were proposed j the latter withdrew. Afc Clutlia, Mncandrew, Thompson, and Mosly; the two latter are opponents of Government. Stafford is returned for Timaru without opposition.—The Daily Times prosecution is adjourned for a week. The proprietors disavow all connection.
