POST OFFICE ITEMS.

We have been supplied with the following Post office returns :—

During the year ended 31st December, 1870, 1,078,629 letters and 631,211 papers passed through the Chief Po-t-office, Auckland ; of this number 128 980 letters and 222,539 papers were interchanged with the United* Kingdom ; 80,561 letters and 67.555 papers with the Australian Colonies; and 14861 letters and 12,501 papers with other foreign ports. While 306,334 letters an- 1 134,081 papers were interchanged with other province* o; New Zealand; 520,817 letters and 190,674 papers circulated in the province of Auckland ; and 27,076 letters and 3870 papers were posted in Auckland, for delivery in ttie city.

During the quarter ended 31st December, 1870, 242,973 letters and 143,009 papers passed through the Chief Post-offlee, Auckland ; of this number 31,292 letters and 51,186 papers were intercha. ged with the United Kingdom ; 17,702 letters and 15,907 papers with the Australian Colonies ; and 352 letters aud 2328 papers with other foreign ports. While 78,252 letters and 31,564 papers were interchanged with other provinces of New Zealand ; 104,141 letters and 4b',034 papers circulated among country post-offices in the province of Auckland ; and 8065 letters and 900 papers were posted for delivery in the city. During the year 1870 the following transactions have taken place in the Post-office Money Order and Savings Bank departments, in this province :—5464 money orders have been issued, for £23,401 17s sd. The commission received on these orders amounted to £358 7s. .1557 money orders have been paid ; amount, £20,051 17s" 6d.—During the same period 4337 Savings Bauk deposits, amounting to £51,409 8s 4d, have been received, including 1019 new accounts opened. 3121 withdrawals were made, amounting to £44.194 ts lOd; and £230 7s lOd were paid as interest on closed accounts.
