OHINEMURI.
THREATENED STOPPAGE OF THE
January 13. I FIND that my fears in respect to the mail being established aro justified by report, and lam afraid will soon be by act. Tereranui, a leading member of our Hauhau community, has just returned from the government of the interior, where ho has been informed that a daily Government mail passes from Shortland to Tauranga via Ohinemuri; this information •he has been circulating freely amongst his Hauhau friends, and they, lam informed, mean to put a stop to it (the mail) in the name of tho King, Ohinemuri being within his jurisdiction. If such should be the case, I wonder if the Native Minister will have the temerity to insist and see that the public service is not interfered with by a few fanatic rebels; he might arrange the matter satisfactorily, at least to tho Maoris, by a judicious distribution of a few tons of flour and sugar, and a number of blankets.
As the mailman was passing through this afternoon to Katikati he was told by the Maoris not to come back this way ; the proper route for the mail was by sea, and such route they would require him to adopt, as they would not allow a mail to be carried through their country,— Evening Mail's correspondent.
