Br the arrival of the s.s. Rangatira we have received late Southern papers, from which Aye take the following : — CHRISTCHURCH. January 9.—A diabolical murder was committed this afternoon, by a colored man named Cedeno, who is footman to the hon. Mr. Robinson. During the day, several of the servant maids had been chaffing him about his approaching marriage, when be attacked one with a table knife, cutting her severely, but she managed to escape. The infuriatedman then rushed at another servant, and pursuing her into the drawing-room, where she stumbled, he immediately stabbed her to the heart, in the presence of Mrs. Robinson and Mrs. Campbell, who were in the room, but could not prevent him. JanuaryJlO.—Cedeno was brought up at the Police Court this morning, aud remanded till to-morrow. The inquest on the body of Margaret Burke takes place at the hospital at two o'clock this afternoon. Mary Glynn, the surviving girl, progresses favorably. A large crowd in the vicinity of the Police Court hooted Cedeno on his being reconveyed in a cab to the police depot. — Cracroft Wilson retires from the contest for Coleridge,

January 11.—The nomination for representatives for the General Assembly for City East took place at noon to-day. A. Duncan, exMayor, and E. J. Wakefield were nominated. The show of hands was in favour of Duncan ; Wakefield demanded a poll, which will be taken on the 18th instant.—Cedeno has been committed for trial for wilful murder. —The Superintendent will bo re elected for Avon, without opposition.
