PROVINCIAL COUNCIL.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 13

The Council sat at one p.m. 3'estenlny. The answer to My. Creighton's question regarding the cost of the Armed Constabulary in "Waikato, Tauranga, and East Coast was deferred till Tuesday. Mr. Sheehan expressed the intention of the Executive to place £300 on the Supplementary Estimates for agricultural exhibitions. The Council went into committee on the Estimate;., and a large number of miscellaneous items was passed. Messages were received from the -.iipeiintendent, recommending tho appropriation of £20,000 for the Kaipara railway, and £'150 for salary of a Warden at Ihe Thames. The Road Dill, No. 3, was read a second time, and passed through committee. The Jvaipara l.ailway Bid was read a second time, aud ordered to be committed on Tuesday next, and the Council adjourned at a quarter to twelve p.m. till Monday next. r

DEPARTURE OF THE G-ALATEA. The departure of H.M.S. Galatea, and of _J.LUf. the Duke of Edinburgh, fixed for to-day, has been 'deferred till Monday. The Luna bearing his Excellency and friends, and the members of the Choral Society, will accompany the Galatea as far as the heads, leaving the Breakwater at half-past nine. We believe a very general regret will attend the departure of Prince Alfred. He and his officers have endeared themselves by their demeanour since their arrival, and by tho warm interest which they have evinced in the institutions of the city, and by a general disposition to cultivate the kindly filings of the citizens. And we have no hesitation in saying that if His Royal Highness and the Galatea are called to engage in the defence of the country in the hostilities now threatening, a very warm interest in Auckland will follow them through the struggle.
