[Before H. Morrow, and J. M. Mitford, Esqs , Justices.] Drunkenness. —A Chaplin, -J. Smith, and J. Foster, were fined each ss. and cotts. O. Johnston, for a second offence, and Anno Young, for being drunk and disorderly, were fined 10s. and costs. J. Brown, for a third offence, was fined 20s. and to be imprisoned seven days. Vagrancy.—A chai-ge of habitual drunkenness against Alex. Chaplin was, in mercy to a large family dependant on him, withdrawn. —Letitia Hughes was charged with using indecent language and gestures in Queenstreet yesterday afternoon. Sentenced to a fine of £10, or three months' imprisonment. LAECEKY. —George Culjan, a little boy of 10 years okl, wa3 charged with having stolen a siher watch from on board the Susan, the property of Joseph llobson. The case was withdrawn in rncrcy to the c/iild's age, and he was cautioned and discharged. Stealing- trom a Dweduko. — James Dunn was charged with having stolen from the house of R. WilliamSj in Ifobson-street, a quantity of jewellery, value £20, on the 201 h December; and also, with having stolen jewellery to similar value from W. Nettleship, on 24th December. Both cases were re-maucli-tl till Wedreslay. Municipal Police Act.—John McLean was charged with having deposited a large quantity of night s< il on apace abutting on Napier-street, and within a few feet of the of the roadway.—Sergeant Jeffrey and Joseph Serth deposed to the facts of the nuisance, and to having traead the trucks of (he wheels up to the water-caoset of defendant. —Fined 40s and costs. — John Codd pleaded guilty to having injured property by driving into the cab of E. Trevena on the morning of the 22nd December. Fined 40s. and costs, or to be imprisoned 14 days. Assault. —Crowley v. Crowley. —This ease was dismissed from non-appearance of parties. ' City/ Kates. —A charge against Peter M'Arthur of refusal to pay city rates, £1 16s, was adjourned i 111 Thursday.—Mr. McGregor for the defence.

Merchant Siiiiting- Act.—o. Brown was charged with disobedience on board the Lord Ashley on /3 rd hist.—Mr. Joy for the defence, —T. Taton chief officer on board, deposed to his having absented himself from the ship without permission, but in cross-examiuation admitted that he had told him to pack up his goods, and told the cook there would be one less for dinner.—Case dismissed with costs.

CLKVEII CAPTUKE. An exceedingly clever capture, and one reflee tin" the greatest credit on the police, was |efiFeoto3 at tin early hour this morning in Wyndham-street. About one o'clock a Mr. JN Tcttle,hip, residing in Albert-street, was under the necessity of going from his house for a medical man. Having left his door vinlockecl, his wife, about a quarter of an hour after, observed a man going out, and ou examination, it was found that about £20 worth of jewellrry had been stolen. On the re!urn of Mr. Netfcleship, information was given to the police, and the only clue afforded was] that he was "a tall dark man. An active search was at once made in the various haunts of thieves, bat without effect. About two hours after the robbery, Sergeant Jeffrey observed a man nnswvring the description in Wyi'dham-sfcreefc, and suspecting him, proceeded to search him, when the man suddenly bolted. The Sergeant, at once gave chase and coming up wilh the man, knockod him down, when the man produced a revolver. Aided by Constable Donovan, who was speedily to the a:d of his brother-officer, the man was hand-cuffed and searched, when the whole of Mr. Nettleship'a jewellery was found on him, together with a great quantity of other jewellery, worth about £20, and quite a pile of pawn tickets. It is believed that a clue is found to various robberies, and that the " fill dark man" will be found to have had a relation to the mysterious disappearance of goods at the Thames some little time ago. The man who is named James Dunn , is a legacy to U3 from the Imperial Authorities, a deserter from the 18th. The vigilance and promptitude ofSerg. ant Jeffery and Constable Donovan, have evidently caged no ordinary bird ; and they are deserving of sincere commendation.
