ARRIVAL OF THE OCEAN WAVE.
VESSEL "WATER-LOG-G-ED. The three-masted sehooncr Ocean Wave, Captain Galbraith, arrived in harbour this morning. This vessel, it will be remembered, left Auckland on the 24th u!t., aud, after taking in a full cargo of timber at Mercury Bay, sailed foi- Chatham Islands, via Napier. She left the Bay on the 2nd instant, and, at about five o'clock, suddenly struck upon a sunken rock, about five miles off the land. The schooner commenced to fill fast, and.in a very short time three feet of "water was reported in the hold, and very soon afterwards the water was level with the deck, and the schooner completely water-logged. Captain Galbraith made an attempt to bear up for Auckland, but the wind being right-ahead, and vessel becoming quite unmanageable, hoisted signals of distress, when the cutter Agnes bore down upon her and on the . following morning piloted her into Mercury Island. As soon as the intelligence was received in Auckland, Captain Clayton, on behalf of the New Zealand Insurance Company, was despatched to the island, and on Wednesday last made sail for Auckland, leaving with a fair wind. When off Cape Colville, the wind, fell light, and subsequently a strong breeze came up from S.W., and as the ship was smothering herself, Captain Galbraith ran prudently for Tryphena Bay, Great Barrier. Yesterday the wind again shifted, and the schooner pro-! ceeded on to this port, arriving safely in port at 7 a.m. The cabin of the vessel is full i of water, but most of the things were saved. Captain Galbraith and his crew have had a trying time, having been three days and two nights on the deck of the schooner without rest, and is deserving of the thanks of those interested in the vessel for having brought her, at great risk of life, eafely into port. Tie believes that the damage done to the hull o? the vessel is not very serious, and that in a short time she will be ready to resume her Toyage. ; _______
