ALEXANDRA. (From the Herald's Correspondent.)
Tuesday afternoon. THE inquest on the body of Mr. Todd is over, and the jury have returned a verdict of " Wilful murder against certain natives, names unknown." A native woman named Rutu, who was in the tent at the time of the murder, stated in evidence that there were two reasons for the murder. One was that there had been attempts made at gold-seeking at Pirongia, and the other was the surveying of the land, and that there had been no personal animosity felt aga nst [against] Todd. The body is to be interred at Hamilton with Masonic honours, Mr. Searancke is here, and all is quiet. The supposed names of the murderers are Pato and Ngaru, rangatiras of the Ngatitamainu tribe.
The intelligence received in town yesterday by the Government is the same, in point of fact, as that which we have published above. The murderers are supposed to have come from Kawhia. We were informed yesterday that Captain Barnett, of the 2nd Hauraki Rifle Volunteers, was in Auckland, with the view of offering to the Government his services, for the purpose of hunting up the murderers. Of uourse these will not be necessary, as the authorities will doubtless adopt the plain course of demanding the culprits at the hands of the King.
