FIRES AND ROBBERIES AT KAIPARA.
A eibe occurred at Helensville on Friday ', which \is r supposed, to be,' the work of aii incendiary. The house was burnt to the ground, and had it not been for the ■Wet4ionS'ofv Mn -,A -R. *'3.' Vercoej'' the cither building 3 adjoining (all belonging to Mqssrs. ■Brown, Campbell and Co.) would have shared the same fate.-—This portion of the country is in a very unprotected state, even though fjh>re are a court house and lockup, and a R. M., but who is mostly absent on native business. .There is bis clerk, however,'and a man in charge of a cutter belonging to the G-overn-ment, which has now cost the country many hundreds of pounds. Money is found for such things as these, but none to protect the property of those who pay the taxes. Why should these two men not be made policemen, so that the settlers migTit have at least a vestige of protection when anything occurs? — Two stores have been broken into within the las.t two jweelss, at, jlelensville, and) a"considerable amount of property Stolen ; and all; this within a few hundred yards of the courthouse, and before the settlers can send! into Auckland to report, of course the lapse of •tiiqe'Jbeing so great that it is next to useless to do SO. —[COBBESPONDENT.] •
