VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.
The preliminary prize firing was resumed at the Butts yesterday, when No. 5 mustered up to the number of four, under the command of Captain Derrom. We have given the scores up to yesterday. The scoring yesterday was as follows: — No. 1 Company. Private Stewart 37 points. No. 3 Company. Captain Clark .. .. 32 points. No. 5 Company. Private Naughton .. .. 25 points. „ Connolly .. .. 21 „ Lieutenant Thompson .. 18 ~ Private Forder .. .. 18 „
The weather was very unfavourable for shooting, and the small attendance is to be put down to the difficulty the men find in getting away from their employment even for a day. No. 6 Company will bring the preliminary firing to a close to-day. We have been requested to call attention lo the weekly parade of this evening, at which Colonel Lyons will be present. A large muster of the men is requested.
NAVAL ARTILLERY
The weekly gunnery practice of this battery took place at Fort Britomart on Tuesday morning, at 5 a.m. Two gun detachments fell in -with their six-pounder Armstrong guns, and fired shot and shell at a target moored in the harbour at a range of 1600 yards distant, under the superintendence of Sergeant Broughton, Gunnery Instructor to the corps. The firing throughout ■was excellent, none of the projectiles being wide of the target, which gave great satisfaction to Major Tisdall and the officers who were present on the ground. It is needless to say how necessary it is for all the members to avail themselves of those practices, -which alone will perfect them for the prize competitions shortly to come off. A muster likewise took place in the evening in the gun-shed, when the recruits were instructed in the use of the target scale, time-fuse, &c, by the Gunnery Instructor. We understand that the carbine firing for the different prizes presented to the Battery will take place on Monday next, at Point Chevalier.
