Church News. —The new Presbyterian Church, at Masterton, was opened yesterday.
Teleghapii to' New 'Plymouth.—The telegraph from Patea to New Plymouth is to be commenced forthwith, and. Capt. Fairchild ha 3 received instructions Lo lay clown the poles at certain convenient spots along the coast.
The Judgment Summons. —This provision iv the Resident Magistrate's Act, by wl ich a debtor may be called upon to show cause why he should not pay after judgment has been obtained against him, is a piece of very successful legislation. When a creditor can prove that a debtor has been in receipt of wages and has been in a posit ion to satisfy the judgment the debtor may be committed to prison .for any term not exceeding three months, but will be released at any time during his term of imprisonment, by simply paying the money. What has been the > onsequence of this law. Five persons have been brought up under tho clause, at l.he Wauganui Court, &nd everyone of them ])aid the amount rather th;in go to prison. The Act has not borne upon any of these persons unfairly, for their ability to pay was established by'the fact that they did pay. Here is an instance of men being made honest by Ac of Parliament. — Herald, November 7. ■■
