CHRISTCHURCH.
October 23.—The Titnaru agricultural and pastoral show came off very successfully yesterday.—The ship Merppe, from London; with 230 Government immigrant?, arrived to-day.—Much satisfaction is expressed here at the prompt manner in which Wellington and Nelson have taken up the case of those made homeless by the late fire. Surprise is expressed that no action has been taken by Otago.—The Fire Brigrde, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, and other associations, have announced their intention of giving concerts in aid of the fire relief fund. —Nearly £1000 has been subscribed in Christchurch up till to-day, without counting the country districts. —The debris of the fire broke into flame yesterday, but was subdued by the inhabitants.—The Government continue to forward blankets, &c, to those in need of them.—A ladies' committee is en gaged in distributing clothing to the women and children.—Mr. Wynn Williams, Provincial Solicitor under the late "ministry, has joined the new Executive in a similar capacity The office being made a non-political one, he resigns his seat for Christchurch in the Council. —Mr. Knight lias given notice of motion today for Tuesday—"That, in view of the circumstances under which the late Executive resigned, it is inexpedient to appoint Mr. Williams Provincial Solicitor." —The Airedale sails for the North on Monday.
