DEPUTATION.
A deputation waited on his Honor the Superintendent at^noon to-day,,.presenting a petition from a large body of residents in the Northern, division of the province, praying for a survey of the country between the Kaipara watei's and Mahurangi, to see if that line was not preferable.for a railway, in lieu of. that between Kaipara and Riverhead. The arguments used were to the effect that Mahurangi was safe for all vessels ; that the distance between it and Port Albert was only seventeen miles, twelve of which Were level, and the watershed only fifty feet over tide mark ; that from Auckland to Port Albert was only fifty five miles from Mahurangi; that a valuable counlry would be opened up, and the line would lead to the most central point of the Kaipara waters, and avoid the necessity of travellers passing the mouth of the Kaipara inlet,' where, for many weeks at times, the passage is dangerous. A petition, identical in terms: is in readiness for presentation to the Provincial Council.
