AUCKLAND NAVAL VOLUNTEERS.
The first practice of this corps took place this morning at 5 o'clock, in Fort Britomart. Present : Captain Guilding (in command), Dr. Wyatt Watling, Lieutenants Le Eoy und L. D. Nathan, Acting Sub-Lieutenant T Whitaon, and thirty-five petty officers and men, with Instructor Broughton. Major Tisdall was present during the firing. Eleven rounds of shot and shell were fired at a distance of 1400 yards, and with excellent effect, every shot being well directed ; and it was evident that, if tho men progress as they have commenced, they will stand a good chanoe for the colonial prizes. Part only of the battery was engaged, but the whole battery will be at work on next practice day. After drill, the men were warned to attend a drill every Wednesday evening at half-past seven, and every Friday morning at five o'clock. We cv sre to strongly urge, not only on members but on the public, the wisdom of showing an intei'est in encouraging the practice of gunnery. This is the branch of service of which Auckland will stand most in need should we become involved in hostilities ; and a time may come, we know not how soon, when our hopes and anxieties may center in our Naval Volunteers.
