The fine s.s. Hero arrived in harbour this morning, from Sydney and Melbourne. We have received papers to the 12th, from which we extract the following : —
MELBOURNE
October 5. —Betting on the Melbourne Cup is gel ting active. Warrior has reached 8 to 1 ; Milesian is freely backed at 100 to 8; Croydon is still first favorite, at 6 to I.— Henry Harris has been remanded to Sydney on a charge of embezzlement. —The immigrants per Colonial Empire were engaged readily ; general servants, £20 to £25 a year ; and good laundresses, £30.—The Federal Commission recommend that steps should be taken to obtain from the Great Powers tho neutrality of the colonies, in the event.of war reaching England. —Warrior is considered uncertain, he stood at 100 to 12 this morning, and since at 100 to 10 ; but edging money has been offered ; Glencoe is going well, and is freely backed.—Candles are easier.
October 6.- -The Executive are considering a petition, emanating from the barristers, for clemency to Supple. The Governor has signed the warrant for the execution of Supple, but he will receive further petitions to-morrow. An application will also be made to the Executive for leave to appeal to the Privy Council. —Mauritius advices to the end of August report the markets steady; but, the crops are scarcely up to expectations.—At the General Sessions, Brockman, a miller, at Richmond, was found guilty of defrauding an employee of £300, and sentenced to three years' imprisonment.—The butchers employed 'by the Meat Preserving Company have struck for 7s. per day; they have been paid 6s.
October 7. —Mr. Muleahj, broker, was thrown from his buggy while going to the Caledonian diggings, and tilled on the spot. — The Ballarat Revival claim swindlers, Coleman, Hannon, and Cawson, have each been sentenced to two years' imprisonment.— Supple has been reprieved, to allow of an appeal to the Privy Council.—There have been heavy floods it Castlemaine.—The Governrefuse to assist the Shire Councils in repairing damage caused by floods.—looo to 10 has been offered on Warrior, which the owner has refused ; the others are unchanged. October B.—General Chute leaves by the Hero (s.), for Sydney en route to California and England. The Volunteers fired a salute. —Several Ballarat speculators have left for Blnmberg diggings, in South Australia. — Eleven vessels from Newcatle brought 4500 tons of coal into the Bay yesterday ; they all report heavy weather. The Greyhound had her bulwarks injured and a boat stove in.— The laborers at the Graving Dock have struck for an extra shilling per day.—Two nuggets —one weighing 37 ounces, and the other 69 ozs. were found at the Berlin diggings.
October 10. —Mr. Macpherson has been elected Mayor by 16 votes. — An enquiry has been initiated into the conduct of Detective Christie, who is accused of striking a prisoner while being handcuffed. — The concert of the Christian Brothers, at the Town Hall, was crammed. £250 were realised towards the funds.—The strike of laborers at the Graving Dock is partly ended, aud new men have been engaged.—Oats have improved ; 3s 9cl has been refused for some to arrive from Tasmania, per Tamar.
October 11.—Convict labor is being employed to erect eai thworks for the batteries.— Candles are less firm ; a line of Bisquet's brandy sold at os 3d ; other sorts remain at quotations.
