ARKEST OF MESSRS. ELLIS AND GRIFMTHS.
Scarcely had the charge of embezzlement been disposed of this morning in the Police Court, when it was known that Captain George Ellis, late of the Luna, and Mr. John Griffiths, had just been arrested on warrant and lodged in the lock-up. It appears that on the information of J. L. Harris and Mrs. Cassidy they had been charged with having represented themselves as cognisant of Harris' position, and us having been employed by the Auckland Detective Office to look after him, and prevent his leaving the country, and that by this false pretence, as alleged by prisoner, they had succeeded in relieving him of some £50 of ihe funds belonging to the ratepayers of Bulla Bulla, of which he had taken charge. As the charge will come up in the Police Court tomorrow morning, and is likely to lead to further disclosures, we shall refrain from criticism of this astounding charge. Both the accused being so well known, the occurrence has created a great sensation in the city. The def ndants were brought up in the Police Court at two o'clock, this afternoon, under the Vagrant Act, and case remanded ; both being admitted to bad for then'appearance before the Bench to-morrow morning: a personal bond in £50, and two sureties of £25 being required from each. Messrs. Dutbie and McCoshkins entered into the required bonds for Mr. Ellis, and Messrs. Lewisson and Perkins for Mr. Griffiths.
