The Evening Star. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 15,1870.
Lris not surprising that the war news should have produced partial paralysis in legislative halls at Wellington ; and we can anticipate the lio^l of gratifica ion that will be uttered by all the Cass u-dra-like prophets of evil. As will be m*oii from another column, the stale of c uitinental politics has induced a proper spirit of caution with, reference to the contemplated loan ; and instead of forcing it on the English market in the pre ent disturbed state of the political atmosphere, a small loan of £500,000 willbe obi uned, and the one million guarantee by l\.. Imper-al Government will be utilised till !he clouds show symptoms of dispersing, Of course any modification of policy, compelled by circumstances that could not have been foreseen, will be proclaimed as an abandonment of the loan policy ; and to some eyes the total destruction of ."*■ ew Zeaand's credit would be fraught with hope. Whether the state of war. if con lined to tho present belligerents, would affect for "ood or evil our borrowing powers, is difficult to predict ; and in the circumstances it is wise policy to avail ourselves merely of tho guaranteed million, which, with Imperial endorsement, will be as negotiable as British consuls. As to the delay in dissolution of the Assembly, an : the holding the Legislature in readiness for sudden emergency, it is difficult to see what purpose is intended to be served. However, it can do no harm, and as it shows Ministers to be big with the momentous issues pending, and imitates Imperialism, it is well. It would certainly be very awful should Few Zealand be involved in war. s-iy with the Cliatham Islands, without Sir George having the couos-1 of his trusty Commons.
