SUR ENDER OF UNKNOWN.
Fuosf Waikaremoana we learn that, about nine days ago, a native named TTemi Kapua was seen coming towards the Wairoa settlements by Sub-Inspector Newland's scouts, who at once took him to the commanding officer of the district (Sub-Inspector Stoppord), Sub-In«peetor Newland being in Poverty Bay, on duty. It proved that thiiindividual was the bearer of some letters from the Uriwera chiefs to the friendly chiefs af Wairoa, Paora A.patu and otherj. The purport of these letter* were that Te W enuanui and Paerau, together with their people, were waiting for the return of Te Makmrini (tke Uriwera chief who surrendered to Mr. Hamlin at, Waikaremoana), to come in and surrender with the whole of their people. Te Haunui and Kereru, together with t ieir followers, about one hundred in number, were going to Maketn. in the Bay of Plenty, there to give themselves up to the Government. "We also learn tint Anaru Matete, with 20 followers, original Poverty Bay natives, were also at Ruataliuna, anxiouco follow the example of so^ne of the Uriweraa It is reported that a letter has been sent to them recommending t em to surrender unconditionally, and throw tlemselves on the meroy of the Government. There is not the slightest doubt they will follow this advice. Te M akarini, together with about 30 friendly natives of Wairoa, un-ier Te Hapimana Tunu> paura, started for Waikaremoana and Kuutatmn» a fortnight last Monday.
