The Evening Star. MONDAY, AUGUST 15, 1870.
It will be interesting to many playgoers in Auckland to read the following extract from the Alia California regarding an old favourite now performing in San Francisco : —California Theatre. —"Lurline, or the Knight and the Naiads," was burlesqued last evening in excellent style by tho Lydia Thompson ttlonde Troupe, a large audience being in attendance. John L. Hall, as Sir Rupert's Seneschal, carried off the honors by as exquisite a piece of burlesque acting as we have seen on the boards for a long while. His make-up was entirely in keeping—in one scene his boots being received with roars of laughter. He afterwards brought down the house in a " double-shuffle" jig.
We perceive by advertisement that Mr. E. Perkins, of the Occidental Hotel, has received all the latest American papers, by the City of Melbourne, which are now on file; also the latest Australian prints, by the Hero. As Mr Perkins has gone to some considerable trouble and expense in obtaining a regular supply of the latest issues by the different steamers, as they arrive, we trust that parties visiting his hotel will be satisfied with perusing instead of appropriating them to their own use. «b^§^
On walking down the wharf this morning we were much struck with the very neat little " omnibus" which was being landed from the Hero. On making enquiries we were informed that tho vehicle in question had been imported by Mr. F. Quick, and is intended to ply between Newton, Ponsonby Road, and Dedwood.
As will be seen from another column, the arrangements in connection with the San Francisco mail have been so far morliGed, that passengers can book by the City of Melbourne and Wonga Wonga, from Auckland to Sydney and vice versa. Tickets, in such case, are obtained from the agents for the Australian Steam Navigation Company, instend of the agents for the San Francisco mail line. The alteration will be a considerable convenience to the travelling public.
In connection with the charge of robbery of clothes-lines, brought up in the Police Court this morning, it will interest some householders, and probably facilitate the course of justice, to make known that the name of " James Gilpins'' is on a shirt, and that of " J. Abram" on a towel in the possession of the police.
