THE PORT OF CALL.
It is with unfeigned satisfaction that wo congratulate our Chamber of Commerce on the result of the deputation to Sydney. There can be no doubt that natural circumstances silently pleaded for Auckland in the matter of the port of call; but the appearance of Messrs. Cruickshank and lloberton before the Sydney Chamber cfConrrrerce gave an embodiment to the claims of our harbour, and the quietus to poor Mr. Collie. Sydney and Auckland, have -long been bound together in frienship and commercial relations, and flic resolutions passed by the Chamber of Commerce in Sydney are the expression of those feelings and the cementing of those resolutions. It must be owned that the question of the port of call has brightened up wonderfully of late ; and though eventually Fiji will, bt-yond all doubt, be included in the trans-Pacific route, the Honolulu, Auckland, and Sydney line is apparently fixed for some time as the course of steamers. In the meantime, who can tell but our relations with California may be so confirmed that a branch line from Fiji to Auckland may never be proposed. The following are the resolu tions of the Sydney Chamber of Commerce, passed on the 14th instant, to bo confirmed on the 18th—the day on which the Novelty sailed, and which there is every reason to believe, from the tone'bf feeling in Sydney, and the influence of the Chamber, will meet with a favorable response in tho Legislature :—
"That the Government of New South Wales be applied to to place a sura of £10,000 on the estimates for the purpose of subsidising a mail service between Sydney and San Francisco, via Auckland and Honolulu, Sydney being made the terminus.
" That the foregoing resolution bo laid before the nes»t general meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, to be held on the 18th instant.
