NEWTON ATHENÆUM.

The members of this institution met on Tuesday evening, in the reading-room, East-street, Mr. A. H. Spicer in the chair. The night of meeting was altered from Tuesday to Monday, to accommodate members -who were also members of the Choral Society. Mr. Sinclair having accepted the office of Secret iry to the " Polytechnic Institution," resigned that of the " Athenceuni," when a vote of thanks was awarded him for his services, and Mr. Samuel Brooking'appointed Secretary. The members were tken entertained with readings from the prase works of Sir Walter Scott. Potraits and fac simileg of his handwriting were handed round, and it was even hinted that the " Newton Athenaeum," in conjunction with Auckland might inaugurate the local centenary of the great novelist, that will take place on the 15tll August, 1871. An intimation -was then made that Mr. Freeman's second lecture on " The Origin of tlie English Nation " would be read at the meeting on next Monday evening-
