FIRING- FOR PRIZES.
The firing for the battalion prizes of the Auckland Rifle Volunteers commenced yeste-r tlay. Those prizes consist of small sums of money, ranging according to the class, from 15s. to £2 10s. The beautiful silver flagon presented by Col. Gore Browne, goes to the marksman making the highest score. The men mustered to the number of fifty early yesterday, morning, and were driven out in express cars to the butts at Point Chevalier. The firing commenced at five minutes past nine. The ranges were 100, 200, 300,400, and 500 yards, three shots at each—fifteen shots in all. The first four ranges were fired at, but on account of the later ess of the hour, the firing at the 500 yard range had to be postponed until to-day. The party were under the charge of Captain Derrom, who was in command. Ensign. Hassan was at the but! 3 assisting the marksmen. Major Tisdall and Colonel Harrington were also on the ground.
