With reference to an article in this morning's Southern Cross, under the heading, " The alleged cruelties at Tahiti," in which it; is stated that an action for damages for alleged libel in connection with, this matter, lias been instituted against a local evening contemporary, we beg to state that the .Evening j Stab is not the paper referred to. The Cabandijji Conceets.—Another of these charming concerts was given last evening at the City Hall, before an excellent attendance. The operatic selection from II Trovatore was charmingly rendered. Mr. Small gave us his Hamlet last evening, which, of course, caused rounds of applause: it is indeed a laughable production, and well worth going to hear and see. To-night Miss Fannie Carandini takes her benefit, and, as Lady Bowen will honor the concert with her presence, we are sure all the lovers of legitimate music will patronise the City Hall to«night. On reference to our adTertising columns an excellent programme is announced, and, with fine weather, we are. sure the charming benejiciare will have no cause to complain of the attend-
Me. and Mrs. Woodroffe, the Bohemian Glass-blowers, have succeeded in obtaining the new City Hall, and will open their exhibition at the termination of the Carandini concerts. Judging from the manner in which their singular entertainment is invariably spoken of by the Southern press, the people of Auckland have indeed a treat in store.
By an advertisement elsewhere it will be seen that Mr. It. Hay wood, upholsterer, has removed from Victoria-street to Queen-street, two doors from Messrs. Vaile Brothers.
Theatbe Royal.—Times have changed With this little theatre, full houses being now the rule; and not the exception, for last night this place of amusement Was again comfortably filled. The " Ticket of Leave Man" was produced, in which Miss G-ougenheim played very effectively May Edwards. We have never seen so much feeling thrown iuto this party as Bhown by Miss Grougeuheim last night. We have before noticed Mr. Bayner as Bob Briely, ho always playing this part to perfection. 'Ihe other characters were sustained very credieably by the members of the company, although we should prefer Mr. Hydes in his own line. He himself does not at all seem comfortable or at home on the s t a g e j n gftc^ ex^ as he !
had to Undertake this last; two nights, and if people do laugh, at him on his appearance, surely the actor is not to be blamed. It must be recollected that each actor does not choose his part, and it is; the person allotting such parts to Mr. Hydes.that are to b'ame, if Llarae is /necessary. Tonight Holly-Bush Hall will be produced, in which Miss G-ougenheim as Meda, is said to be excellent/ We hope thare will be a good attendance. ,! Pkince of Wales Tiieatbe.—The fine drama of " The Hidden Hand" was again produced at this'fheatreand passed, off very successfully.
