DRUNKENNESS

Thomas Gordon was fined 5s and costs, or to b- imprisoned 24 "hours for this offence.; Mary Smith, b_ng called on a similar charge, and;uot appearing, forfeited bail. LARCENY. E. J. A. Williams, A. Graham, and W. Salmon, were charged with having stolen from tho island of Motuiapu on the 19th May, one boat, value £25, the property of John Reid. They were also charged with having stolen from the p:rson of Walter Stigley, on the Bth of July, one si ver watch, a gold "chain and locket, and cash ; total value £25. On tho application of Mr. .Inspector Brohani, the cases were remanded till Monday. Bridget Hardgravo was charged with having, on the 14th inst., stolen from Messrs. Arthur's store, one pair boots, a butter plate, and sauce tureen, value 255. Mr. Bennett for the defence. John Miner deposed: I aui Mr. Arthur's storeman. Saw prisoner en the 14th in Mr. Arthur's store, between four and five. . Found her with a pair of boots, which she said she had bought from Mr. Cater. On going to him, he said ho never had the boots in his shop. Came back, and, on going upstairs, prisoner left. On finding her, she staled that she had stolen them. To the Bench : I had asked her before she said so.

To Mr. Bennett: I identify the boots by the eyeliet holes. Have seen many such boots. They are worth about ss. Gd. William Arthur deposed : I am of the firm of C. Arthur and Son. Saw prisoner in my store on the 14th. Found the boots produced, also sauce tureen and butter plate. I identify them as mine.

To Mr. Bennett: I would not actually give anything for the same tureen and butter cooler. 'lhey are valuable as part of tho service. 1 should think they are value for two shillings. Constable Jeffrey deposed : I apprehended, prisoner in Abercrombie-street. She stated she had not been out that day. The Bench looked on this case in a merciful light, and as this waa the first case.fand the value trivial, ordered the goods to be restored and dismissed the ea-e.

HIGHWAY BATES,

Thomas Johnson was summoned on the complaint of Wm. Bowen, collector of rates for the Matakana Highway district, for refusing to pay £1 19s- 9d., rates duo. Plaintiff not being fully prepared to go on with the case it was dismissed. The Court then rose.
