1 The following correspondence relative to She supposed castaways on the Auckland 'slands appeal- in the Shipping Gazette : — .The Passengers' Line- of Packets for New .ealand, &c., Offices, 34, Leadenhall-street, E.O. London April 13,1870.—5ir,—We beg 0 bring before the notice of Her Majesty's 'i^o-fci-nment the enclosed extract from the iliipping and Mercantile Gazette of last night, I tating that the master of the Ship Alexander )uthie, from Melbourne, sighted several fires ijn the cliffs of the Auckland Islands, but was _able to approach to rescue the castaways r .ho might there be found. As the only hissing ship that we know of homeward -Sound from Australia or New Zealand is the •latoaka, Captain Stevens, belonging _*ls, $_ich sailed from Lyttelton (N.Z.) on the 73th May, 1869, with about fifty passengers aid 40 crew, and has not since been heard of, '*. appears to us probable that some of her ieople may have contrived to reach these Hlands. In the interests of humanity we roidd beg respectfully to suggest to Her -il'jesty's Government that instructions might -.'.c sent by next outgoing mail to the Commoiore on the Australian station to order down 1 cruiser to the islands to institute a search, hould no ship have been in the meantime to She spot. As the case is an urgent one, we f-ould beg to mention that the next Australian 'nail via Marseilles, is made up in London on Tridaj, the 22nd instant.—We have the jlfonor to be, Sir, your most obedient servants, 'haw, Savill and Co.
