A fire occurred in Nelson on Tuesday, but it was extinguished without much damage.

The Independent authoritatively contradicts the statement of Dudley Ward's appointment at, District Judge at Westland. It says the office is not vacant.

Archdeacon Hadfield has been nominated as Bishop of Wellington by.. the Diocesan Synod. The brig Layard, from Newcastle to Timaru, with coals, parted her cables yesterday morning through stress of weather, and went ashore near Timaru. The crew nine in number, were all saved by means of the rocket apparatus. The vessel was condemned, and sold for £230 10s. She has 250' tons coal on board, and, as a furious sea is running, it is feared she will break up. She is owned and insured in Melbourne. 7.40 p.m. Information has just been received ef the total loss of the schooner Ruby, of Wellington, while loading at Kaikoura. No particulars to hand. This vessel was insured for £600 in the New Zealand Insurance Company. DUNEDIN, June 11. In the Provincial Council last night the following motion by Mr. ; Shepherd was carried on the voices :—" That this I ouncil is of opinion that the line of steaniors at preseut established between Sydney and San Francisco, via Auckland, is of no value to the province of Otago; and' this Council ' hereby records its protest against the continuation of a contract for such line."
